NAPW Indy Chapter Donates Hundreds of Items to Dress for Success This July

The Indianapolis NAPW Chapter met at the Dress for Success Indy headquarters to wrap up their Christmas in July – Suits for Success Drive. The drive boasted a very successful response!

Lisa Ralph, Andrea Cowley, and Barb Ellsworth hosted the event and provided a tour of the Dress for Success facility. It was apparent that Dress for Success provides more than suits to its clients. They feature a facility that rivals leading training centers and a department store combined.

Indianapolis Chapter President, Lynn Moore kicked off the meeting by welcoming everyone, briefly speaking about the agenda and introducing the event's hosts. Members were asked to introduce themselves and reflect on their experience in gathering Suits for Success and others' reactions as they recruited co-workers to participate in the suit drive.

The Stories Behind the Suits…
Jaye Miller, who encouraged her co-workers to participate, shared a story of a co-worker who reached out to thank her for the experience. She shared that her mother had passed the previous year and she decided that she would go through her mother's items and her own closet. She commented that this was a very cleansing and healing experience that helped her let go of material things in order to help another person. Jaye collected so many items it took several ladies and several trips to empty her car!

Carol Bentley was happy to share a "like new" suit that would feel new to the client.

Shannon Hitchcock shared a story of a "lucky" cream suit that got her the job more than once, and she is happy to share the luck with another.

Michelle "Mikki" Post had few clothing items to donate but headed to the stash of cosmetic samples and personal care items that always made her feel "professional." Mikki contacted a few consultant friends and they also raided their storage for items that would add polish to an interview.

Jennifer McNett remembers when she and her mother shopped for her interview suit together. She remembers the interviews and is happy to share her first suit with another woman.

Urban Humanitarian Projects (UHP) Announces $3000 in Matched Donations for the Urban Santa Project to Provide 1,000 Christmas Gifts

This year's Urban Santa Project follows two successful campaigns, which provided children with toys and winter clothes in 2009 and personalized toy delivery to over 300 children in 2010. The project is supported entirely by donations from individuals and is organized completely by volunteers so that 100% of the donations are used for charitable programs. The team works with established charities in urban communicates to distribute the gifts residing at various housing facilities. Each child receives a wrapped present with a hand-written, personalized note.
"What makes our program unique is that our Santa and his elves hand-deliver the gifts to children on Christmas morning," said Santhosh Cherian, UHP's Executive Director and founder of the Urban Santa Project. "We want to do everything we can to make sure every child is smiling on Christmas morning, regardless of their social or economic background."
In 2009, 23 gifts were delivered at Covenant House: Mother-Child Crisis Center and winter coats and accessories were provided to homeless men and women through Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen. Last year, the Christmas charity event saw tremendous growth, distributing 300 gifts to children from five organizations. UHP plans to more than triple that number this year.
UHP works with partner charities to collect names of children living at their facilities. All the shopping and wrapping is done by the volunteers. Program partners include Palladia, Covenant House, WIN (Women in Need, Inc.), The Children's Aid Society, Providence House and Operation Haiti Recovery. Each child receives a gift that is age-and gender-appropriate.
"A new component for this year is the personal hygiene kit," Cherian said. "Because UHP was founded and is run by medical students from St. George's University, w women's jackets e wanted to take advantage of this great opportunity to have 'Santa' stress the importance of taking care of your body and your health."

Bright Young Things - Selfridges Continues its Talent-scouting Initiative to Showcase and Support the UK’s Most Exciting Young Creatives

Following the success of 2011's 'Bright Young Things', the pioneering project by Selfridges to seek out and champion the most exciting young creators in the UK, January 2012 will see the iconic designer fashion store re-launch the campaign on an even greater scale.

The second Bright Young Things scheme will feature a total of fifteen UK-based emerging talents from the worlds of women's fashion, men's fashion, art and design and food.

From 6 January 2012 until the end of February, the project will see the Oxford Street and Duke Street windows of the store showcase these future stars, as the chosen creators are each given their own window t fashion jackets o take over – from conception to realisation; their brief is solely to communicate the essence of their work.

All fifteen designers and artists will sell their products – including women's clothing, men's designer fashion, art and food - from three temporary shops located in the Oxford Street flagship store, as well as online at Selfridges.com, providing major exposition of their work to the public and the opportunity to sell their collections from an international renowned retailer's shop floor.

Recognising the hub of diversity and innovation that is London's creative scene, Selfridges' Buying and Creative teams have selected this year's Bright Young Things for their diversity, breadth and promising talent.

Max Studio Opens its First European Flagship Location in London

Brightening up what has been a particularly cold and dreary London Winter is the arrival of some California sunshine in the form of Los Angeles based clothing label Max Studio. Acupath Laboratories Urges Screening During Melanoma Awareness Month

May is Melanoma Awareness Month and according to dermatopathologist Dr. George Hollenberg, raising awareness of the dangers of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, is more important than ever. "The medical community has been actively promoting preventive measures for years, especially limiting sun exposure," says Dr, Hollenberg, medical director of Acupath Laboratories, "yet the incidence of deadly melanomas continues to rise and, even more troubling, the greatest increase appears to be in young people, particularly young women." A recent study, published in the April 2012 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, showed that between 1970 and 2009, the incidence of melanoma increased eightfold among young women ages 18-39 and fourfold among young men in Olmsted County, Minnesota.

"We can't say with certainty what is responsible for the rise in cases of melanoma," says Dr. Hollenberg, "but there is good reason to think that the increased risk for young women stems from the use of indoor tanning beds. Of the many risk factors for developing melanoma, the one that is easiest to control is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. What makes tanning beds so dangerous is that they emit 10-15 times more UV radiation than the midday sun." Some states and local jurisdictions have implemented regulations aimed at preventing young people from using indoor tanning beds, such as requiring parental consent for those under 18, but the regulations are difficult to enforce. "That's why Melanoma Awareness Month is so important," Dr. Hollenberg says. "It gives us the opportunity to help people learn how to minimize their risk and understand the importance of screening to ensure that we catch the disease in its earliest treatable stages."

Dr. Hollenberg answers key questions about melanoma prevention, screening and risk:

How can I minimize the risk of melanoma?

• The most important measure to prevent skin cancers of all types is to limit exposure to UV radiation from the sun:
• Stay out of the sun during the midday hours (10am to 4pm).
• Wear protective clothing, including a hat with a brim to shade the ears and neck, a shirt with sleeves to cover the shoulders and pants. The best fabric for skin protection has a tight weave to keep sunlight out.
• Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 every day. Look for a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
• Use a higher SPF at higher elevations.
• Do not sunbathe or use tanning salons! There is no such thing as a safe tan. If the skin is tan, it has already been damaged.

Who should be screened? How often?
Everyone! Unlike many other common cancers, melanoma has a wide age distribution. Rates continue to increase with age and are highest among those in their 80s, but melanoma is one of the more commo women's jackets n cancers in young adults. Additional factors that increase risk of include having fair skin; having a history of one or more severe, blistering sunburns as a child or teenager; having many moles or unusual moles; a family history of melanoma; and a weakened immune system.

The American Cancer Society recommends periodic head-to-toe skin exams as part of routine annual checkups. In addition, medical professionals recommend monthly self-examination to identify changes in moles, freckles and other skin lesions.

What should I look for?
Skin cancers may have many different appearances. General guidelines for self-examination follow the "ABCDE" rule for danger signs:

• Asymmetry: An irregular, uneven shape; one half the lesion different from the other half.
• Border: Jagged or blurry edges.
• Color: Various colors, often multicolored lesions of tan, dark brown, or black, sometimes pink or red, blue or white.
• Diameter: 6 millimeters or larger (about the size of a pencil eraser).
• Evolution: Any change in size, color, or appearance.

"The most important warning sign of melanoma is a new or changing skin lesion, regardless of its size or color, particularly if changes occur over a short period of time," Dr. Hollenberg emphasizes. "Any suspicious finding should be brought to the attention of a physician." The only way to accurately diagnose melanoma is with a biopsy in which all or part of the suspicious mole or growth is removed and examined microscopically by a pathologist. If melanoma is diagnosed, the next step is to determine the extent, or stage, of the cancer and the appropriate treatment. "We're seeing improved diagnosis and survival rates for melanoma," Dr. Hollenberg concludes. "Education and prevention programs like Melanoma Awareness Month, which lead to improved screening, play an important role in combating this disease."
